Local Senedd Member, Laura Anne Jones, has called on the Welsh Government to formulate a strategy to tackle obesity in Welsh children.
Laura Anne Jones said, “Obesity is one of the biggest health crises in the country.
“Living with excess weight puts people at greater risk of serious illness or death, including from Covid-19.
“According to Public Health Wales, over a quarter of children in Wales are overweight, including more than 12 % who are obese.
“Wales has a higher percentage of adolescents self-reporting to be overweight compared to England. What is more worrying is the fact that one in eight reception age children are obese.
“Past Welsh Government strategies to tackle obesity have clearly failed as there has been little change in the prevalence of obesity since 2012.
“The current coronavirus pandemic has highlighted the importance of tackling obesity so our children can grow up to live healthy lives.
“The Welsh Government must formulate a strategy to tackle obesity in children in Wales as a matter of urgency."
