Prime Minister’s announcement shows the way to reopen sports venues in Wales

Local Member of the Welsh Parliament, Laura Anne Jones MS, has welcomed the Prime Minister’s announcement today of a roadmap out of lockdown that paves the way for the return of spectators to sports stadiums in England.

Under a four-part plan to lift the coronavirus lockdown, Boris Johnson said outdoor sports including football, golf and tennis will be allowed to resume in England from 29 March.

Leisure centres, gyms and swimming pools can open from 12 April and up to 10,000 fans could be back in stadiums by mid-May.

Under Wales' current restrictions, sport and leisure facilities are closed.

Laura Anne Jones said:

“I very much welcome the Prime Minister’s announcement today which sets out a clear roadmap for the resumption of sport and leisure activities in England.

This is exactly the sort of detailed plan that the sports and leisure industry in Wales has been calling out for but so far has not received.”

“I believe this road map paves the way for the Welsh Government to reopen sports and leisure venues in Wales and I call on the First Minister to provide greater clarity about his plans to return this sector to some sort of normality.”
